et aliae
et aliae is London-based producer Wern Luk, who makes twinkling, future-forward electronic pop, infused with references and samples pulled from r&b, trap, shoegaze and post-rock.Acting as a major influence on the et aliae identity, Luk cites her studies at Central Saint Martins that focus on the intersection between design and contemporary art – specifically art that engages with new media such as video installations, net.art and post-internet art – as a defining force. She draws additional inspiration from the sculpturally-conceived light installations of Dan Flavin and Olafur Eliasson, crafting et aliae material in the same way those artists make use of the transformative power of light on space.
Musically, Luk was classically trained on the piano and cites JS Bach as an influence on her songwriting, with her foundations set upon an appreciation of the master’s polyphonic textures and harmonies. Similarly, brushstrokes of Tchaicovsky and Rachmaninoff concertos can be heard in her synth constructions and choice of orchestral instruments such as piano, glockenspiels and strings.
Already with an enthusiastic and active online fanbase, Luk regards et aliae as an internet-based, post-geographical project. Musical associations often include contemporaries, Ryan Hemsworth, Spazzkid, Giraffage, Kero Kero Bonito, Yung Lean, Maxo and others. Although the sound of et aliae doesn’t tuck neatly into a specific subgenre of music, her shared identity with the global, genre-shifting spirit of each of these producers is apparent. Her original music has been recently featured on Ryan Hemsworth’s Secret Songs compilation, and her remixes for artists Lemonade, Kero Kero Bonito and ASTR have seen coverage on sites ranging from Dummy to Pigeons & Planes.
